As a coach, being prepared is key to creating a smooth and successful season for your players. Whether it’s a game, a tournament, or just practice, having a well-stocked coach’s bag can make all the difference. Beyond game-day essentials, safety should also be a priority, especially if you’re coaching alone. Here’s a checklist of essential items you should pack before the start of each season and replenish for every game or practice.

Must-Have Essentials for Every Coach’s Bag

1. First Aid Kit
The first aid kit is an absolute necessity. Include items like band-aids, nail clippers, small scissors, athletic wrap, tape, batteries, instant cold ice packs (break to activate), and even a small pair of tweezers. Make sure to replenish it regularly.

2. Glucose Tablets
For emergencies where quick energy is needed, especially for players with low blood sugar, glucose tablets are a must.

3. Extra Water Bottles
No matter how many reminders you send, someone always forgets water. Keep extra bottles in your bag to keep everyone hydrated.

4. Cooling Towels
In hot weather, cooling towels are a lifesaver. Keep a few in your bag to help players cool down quickly.

5. Extra Gear
Pack extra jerseys, socks, shin guards, and even cleats if you have a similar shoe size to your players. Don’t forget goalie jerseys, gloves, and a few pinnies for impromptu changes.

6. Game-Ready Equipment
Always have a match ball pumped and ready to go. Bring a pump and extra needles in case you need them on the spot.

7. Practice Essentials
Don’t forget to pack plenty of balls, cones, and pinnies for practice sessions. These are vital for drills and keeping practices organized and efficient.

8. Hair Ties
This may seem small, but it’s a necessity during games or practice for those with long hair. Clip a bunch onto a carabiner and attach it to your bag for easy access.

9. Pain Relievers
Aspirin, ibuprofen, or Tylenol should be handy for minor aches or injuries. They’re especially helpful (for coaches) at long tournaments.

10. Pads and Tampons
If you’re coaching girls over nine, having these in your bag is essential.

11. Line-Up Cards and Player Info
Before each game, have line-up cards filled out. Keep player cards in alphabetical order, and print out the game schedule and medical release forms for every player.

12. Emergency Contacts
Have a list of all players and their emergency contacts printed out and saved in your phone. It’s also helpful to organize them in your phone’s contacts by relationships and/or groups for quick access.

13. Gatorade and Mustard Packets
For hot days, pack Gatorades or other hydration drinks. Keep mustard packets for dealing with muscle cramps—they work wonders.

14. Cold Weather Gear
Extra gloves, hats, and sweatshirts are great to have when the weather takes a chilly turn. Be prepared for all seasons!

15. Trash Bags
Rainy days can soak everything, including players’ gear. Keep trash bags in your bag to protect their equipment.

16. Speaker for Music
If you like setting the tone with music during practice or warm-ups, a small speaker is a great addition to your coach’s bag.

17. Notebook and Pens
Keep a notebook and pens handy for jotting down game strategies, notes, or important information during practices and games.

18. Whiteboard and Markers
A small whiteboard and markers are essential for illustrating plays and strategies quickly during practice or games.

19. Flashlight
A flashlight is crucial for late evening practices or when you need to navigate dark areas after games.

20. Personal Alarm
Carrying a personal alarm, such as a Birdie, is a simple but effective safety tool, especially if you’re coaching alone or leaving a practice/game late at night.

21. Flares or Safety Cones
In case of emergencies, having small safety cones or flares can help direct people to a safe spot or signal for help if necessary.

22. Jumper Cables
You never know when someone might need a jump-start after a game. Having jumper cables on hand can be a huge help for stranded parents or players. I’ve used mine several times per season.

Other Game-Day Essentials

  • Line-Up: Have your lineup ready for each game to avoid last-minute scrambles.
  • Home and Away Jerseys: Remind your team that home teams wear colors and away teams wear white—but always bring both jerseys.
  • Rain Out Line: Sign up for weather alerts to stay updated on potential cancellations, and encourage parents to do the same to avoid any confusion on game day.
  • Sportsmanship: Ensure that your team shakes hands with the opposing team and refs after every game. Remind fans and supporters to approach the coach or assistant if they have complaints about refereeing.
